Soldier's discharge for George Pratt, Sergeant, Co. G, 59th Regt. of the Virginia Vols. Enlisted 1st July 1861 to serve one year. Discharged by reason of disbursement of his company. Given at Richmond, 15th Jan. 1862. Printed on blue paper, ink fading. Three pronounced vertical folds in the paper.

Knapsack

Rigid expanding box knapsack -frame of pine covered with black enameled canvas. Dimensions of frame are 12" x 14 1/2" x 3 3/4". Outer flap has envelope with gussets on inner side. Body of envelope is 11 7/8" x 15". Gussets are 12"L x 1 3/4" W at top to zero at bottom. Rectangular flap -5 1/2" x 15 1/2" stitched to inner top edge of knapsack -covers top of envelope -ties to body of envelope with rawhide straps. Box portion closed by four triangular flaps, buckling across. Inner portion of top edge is unpainted canvas -two sets of blanket straps at either end. Three straps on outer flap are missing -some stitching and leather reinforcements remain where straps would have been. Two partial outer straps at bottom edge would have buckled to straps on outer flap. Buckle remains on center strap. Two sets of leather blanket straps on outer top edge, leather dyed black. Each strap 3/4" x 2 3/4". Two carrying straps on back -each 11 1/2"L x 1 3/4" W. Proper right strap is missing auxiliary straps. Proper left strap has two auxiliary straps riveted to strap by brass rivet. Breast strap is 13"L x 1"W has copper alloy hook at end. Armpit strap is approx. 17"L x 1 1/8"W buckled to iron buckle on bottom edge. "H.H. HOWARD" stencilled in black letters on canvas on top inner edge. Letters are 1/4"H. "21 MASS" painted on outer flap with white paint, characters range from 1 1/16" to 2" in height. "Co. G." painted on outer proper right side in same white paint - "C" and "G" are 1 1/4" H, "o" is 1/2" H. 3/2/10 inventory: #10
