Beads

An assortment of jewelry was discovered. Found among the jewelry was this cluster of lavender beads on interlocking rings.

Us Navy Combs

These seaman's' combs are evidence of the enduring quality of hard rubber. They were undamaged after being underwater for more than a century! They carry the raised letters, "I.R. Comb Co, GOODYEAR'S Patent, May 6 1851." The reverse side carries, "U.S. NAVY." The combs came from the Quartermaster's storeroom and were not issued. After the USS Cairo was raised, the Park was contacted by Ace Comb Company who indicated that they still had the original comb molds.

Shoes

c. 1851, c. 1862

There were three types of shoes found on board the USS Cairo. The storeroom contained an unused style of Navy issue shoes. The Navy shoes were black leather high tops with leather strings; soles were three layered and heels four layered. Hobnails were used on the sole and heel. These shoes were made using lasts for left and right feet.

Boatswain's Pipe

This pipe was found in the forward starboard compartment of USS Cairo. Perhaps, during all of the excitement, it was dropped by one of Cairo's two boatswain mates, either 27 year-old Richard Lymont or 25 year-old Charles Smith.
