Full portrait of Federal Brgd General Alexander Asboth. Asboth is seated with dog lying at his feet. Asboth is wearing very elaborate non-regulation cape. Cape has large stripes. Wearing unusually large leather boots, which go up above knee. Born in Hungary in 1811. Exiled by Austria in 1851. Volunteered for the Union in 1861 and Was accepted in 1862. In March 1862 he was wounded at Pea Ridge (Elkhorn Tavern). In 1863 took command of forces in Kentucky and then later western Florida. In 1864 at the Battle of Marianna he was badly wounded in the left cheek. He later served as Ambassador to Argentina in 1866, and died as a result of his cheek wound which never properly healed.
