"The Battle Of Lake Champlain"

Date:
1884
Creator:
J.O. Davidson

It is indeed fortunate for the United States of America that the lake portion of this battle was won for us by Thomas MacDonough, as the land battle would surely have been lost if the order for a general attack had ever been given as we were greatly outnumbered on land, but only slightly outnumbered on the water. In this painting Davidson has depicted the American ships Ticonderoga, Preble, Eagle, and Saratoga II triumphing over the British vessels Confiance, Linnet, and smaller British galleys.
