Harpers Ferry B&O Bridge Ruins

Date:
July 1861

Two months after the start of the Civil War, the B&O Railroad bridge into Harpers Ferry was in ruins. Only the piers remained. The B&O tried to reopen the bridge, replacing the wooden structure with "Bollman" iron spans (named after their inventor). The first two Bollman spans were soon destroyed. Four later spans survived the war, although troops closed the bridge by burning its wooden floors.

Harpers Ferry B&O Bridge

Date:
1877-1880

By 1870 the B&O Railroad bridge into Harpers Ferry was made entirely of Bollman iron spans. The Bollman bridge carried rail traffic from 1870 until 1894, when the bridge was converted for automobile traffic. Although the 1936 flood destroyed the Bollman bridge, sections of the original piers still stand in the Potomac.
