Confederate General Jubal Early continued to attack Washington D.C., on July 11 and 12, where Union reinforcements were rushed up to Washington from the Petersburg campaign to defend the capital city.

Frock Coat Of Union Major General Lew Wallace

Major General Lew Wallace commanded the Union forces at the Battle of Monocacy on July 9, 1864. While severly outnumbered, Wallace's Union soldiers delayed the Confederate assault on Washington D.C., and allowed the Union command to reinforce its defense of Washington. After the Civil War, Wallace was best known for writing Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ.

Major General Lew Wallace's Shoulder Straps
