Major General Lew Wallace commanded the Union forces at the Battle of Monocacy on July 9, 1864. While severly outnumbered, Wallace's Union soldiers delayed the Confederate assault on Washington D.C., and allowed the Union command to reinforce its defense of Washington. After the Civil War, Wallace was best known for writing Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ.
