2003.002.006 Carte-de-Visite Portrait of George A. Custer as General of the 7th Cavalry Ca. 1875. Custer is seated and looking to his right. Elaborate braided cord around his neck and over his left breast. Post-Civil-War shoulder boards. "General Custer" printed on mat border below the photo. On back in pencil: "1295.00" and "1YR".

Pouch, Tobacco

2003.002.212a/b Tobacco Pouch 2003.002.212a is a "Bandoleer style" pipe bag. Purported to be bought by Indian Scout J. W. Atwood from an unidentified Sioux Chief. The design is similar to one that was worn by Sitting Bull. The design is a Great Lakes design. Beaded and has a loop for placing the head through and a large pouch below. Backside is black heavy cloth. Front is beaded with floral designs. 2003.002.012b is a card that came with the pouch. It is dated 1926 and is not signed. The Card reads: "Tobacco Pouch which was in actual service when bought from a Sioux Chief in Dakota, by J. W. Atwood in 18(unreadable) This Chief was one who took part in the Gen. Custer massacre on June 25, 1876. -over- To Edgar F. Salisbury In grateful (unreadable) of the many delightful auto-rides given to Aunt Laura 1926.
