Pres. George Washington's Appointment of William Carmichael as Charges des Affairs to Spain

On the walls of Wright's Chance hangs on one of the few documents signed by both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was serving as Secretary of State in Washington's first term in office at the time. The document is a Presidential appointment naming William Carmichael (c.1739-1795), a Congressman from Queen Anne's County in Maryland, as Charge des Affaires to the the court of his Catholic Majesty, the King of Spain. One of America's first "secret agents," Carmichael smuggled papers out of London for the Continental Congress sewn inside the cover of a pocket dictionary.

Letter from James McHenry to Margaret (Peggy) Caldwell

A three-page letter from James McHenry to his future wife, Margaret (Peggy) Caldwell, describing George Washington's resignation of his commission of commander in chief of the Continental Army on December 23, 1783. McHenry was one of Maryland's delegates to the Continental Congress, and was a member of the Congressional protocol committee which oversaw the resignation.

George Washington's Resignation Speech

George Washington's final draft of his resignation speech that he gave in the Old Senate Chamber of the Maryland State House on December 23, 1783. In response to instructions from Congress that he was expected to make formal remarks, Washington wrote this speech while he was in Annapolis. Upon resigning his commission as commander in chief of the Continental Army, Washington rode home to Mount Vernon to be home for Christmas.
