The Reverend Smith served as the Field Secretary of the Commission and originally published this book in 1869. The Commission was a voluntary organization formed to provide religious support to the armies in the field. Often this was done through the distribution of bibles, preaching of sermons or ministering to the sick and wounded. The "incidents" of the title refers to anecdotes and stories that were collected or became known to the Commission. These were believed to reflect the often sacrosanct nature of the wartime experience and frequently revolve around men facing death and expressing their faith in their God. It must have been a frequent source of sermon material for many pastors in the latter years of the 19th century.
