Taken while arriving at the Lone Pine train station. "Mother and child evacuees of Japanese descent on train en route to War Relocation Authority center at Manzanar, CA." Shi Nomura later recalled that it was a welcome relief to arrive at the Lone Pine train station after an all-day train trip from Los Angeles. Shades had been drawn the entire trip, and armed soldiers were stationed in each rail car. The silent resignation of the adults contrasted with the excitement of children who saw the trip as an adventure. Shi watched young mothers with their babies, elderly Issei, and teenagers empty from the train and wait for the line of buses that would take them to Manzanar and an uncertain future.
