Model Of The U.S.S. <i>Shark</i>

Shark was launched in 1821 at the Washington Navy Yard. With Matthew C. Perry, her first commander, she sailed to Africa to suppress the slave trade and piracy. In 1822 she joined Commodore James Biddles' squadron in the first of many cruises to eliminate piracy and slave trading in the West Indies. On March 25, 1822, Perry took formal possession of what is now Key West, Florida. In between cruises to the West Indies and Africa, she sailed in 1827 to Newfoundland to defend American fishing interests. Read more »
