William H. Buckler

Date:
1871

This formal portrait of William H. Buckler (1867-1953), Eliza "Didy" Ridgely White Buckler’s (1828-1894) youngest child, has always been referred to by the child’s family nickname, "Little Willie." His father was Didy’s second husband, Dr. Thomas Hepburn Buckler, whom she married in 1866. The portrait of Little Willie was likely painted in France, where the family resided at that period and for many years thereafter. Little Willie grew up to be a noted diplomat and a respected classical archeologist.

Although to our modern eyes some of the children in this painting may appear to be girls due to their clothing, all the individuals depicted are boys. John Ridgely (1851-1938) and his brother Charles Ridgely (1853-1873) (on the right) are shown with their first cousins Henry White II (1850-1927) and Julian Leroy White (1853-1923), enjoying the pastimes provided by the countryside around Hampton. The mansion’s cupola can be seen in the background of the painting.

Dancing Girl

Painted by an unknown artist and presented to Mrs. Lee. It hung for many years under Washington's portrait in the parlor of Arlington House. It reflects the Custises’ and Lees’ fondness and appreciation for art and perhaps even their unconventionality. Mildred Lee inherited the painting which she gave to the donor, Mr. George Upshur.
