Knapsack

Federal box knapsack, 71st New York ID. Box knapsacks of this type, while of a pattern known to have been used prior to the war, are in most cases 1880s production that were surplused to Bannerman's. Militia box knapsack. Pine frame. Outer flap is black leather, backed with canvas, Front and sides covered in black painted canvas. Two horizontal flaps on inner side behind outer flap made of black painted canvas, tie together with cotton straps. Leather blanket straps were at the top, four loops are missing. Leather carrying straps are also missing. The frame is coming apart at the corners. The canvas is worn at the corners, the leather is dry and brittle. "71" stenciled in white on outer flap. "Pierson, W.D." written on tape, applied to front of knapsack below remnants of carrying straps
