This spectacular Bureau of Ships drawing room model depicts the U.S. Navy's ultimate battleship for World War Two. The four Montana class battleships were the most powerful ever seriously scheduled for production. Mounting twelve sixteen-inch guns and displacing 60,500 tons, they weighed 10,000 tons more than the Iowa class battleships. Contract plans were being prepared when the tide of war indicated that follow-ons to the Iowa class would not be needed and construction of these mighty ships was canceled in July 1943. Read more »
