Jacket

C. 1863

Artillery shell jacket which belonged to First Sergeant Frederick Malish of the 1st Wisconsin Light Artillery. Blue wool coat with red piping at neck, cuffs, lapel, and bottom edge as was regulation for artillery soldiers. Below the red first sergeant insignia is a yellow veterans service chevron denoting that Malish reenlisted in the artillery as a veteran. With the reenlistment of veteran volunteers service chevrons are seen in late war images among the volunteers, who would have had less than five years service in a war that did not last that long.
