Grey Folding Forage-style Cap

Date:
1835
Creator:
Charles C. Plaisted, Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Gray wool folding forage-style cap with stamped brass visor, unpainted on underside, various decorative embellishment, and a black hackel plume. Cap form derives directly from the black leather forage cap adopted by the U.S. Army in 1833, which remained government issue until 1839. Cap is of three-piece construction designed to fold flat except for the visor; adaptation of the government's practical design for militia use effectively defeated an element of practicality. Edges of the poke are piped with black leather. Read more »
