Chaplains In Gray

Date:
2003
Creator:
Pitts, Charles F.
Publisher/Studio:
Concord, VA: Re-Enactors Mission for Jesus Christ

Mr. Pitts tells the story of the chaplains' role in the Confederate armies. An appendix provides a list of the Confederate chaplains and the units they served. Unfortunately it is not as complete a list as can be found elsewhere. Much of the book reads like a sermon and I suspect it was the source of more than one. It does, however, provide a flavor of the world the Confederate army chaplains inhabited.

Incidents Of The U.s. Christian Commission

Date:
2003
Creator:
Smith, Edward P.
Publisher/Studio:
Concord, VA: Re-Enactors Mission for Jesus Christ

The Reverend Smith served as the Field Secretary of the Commission and originally published this book in 1869. The Commission was a voluntary organization formed to provide religious support to the armies in the field. Often this was done through the distribution of bibles, preaching of sermons or ministering to the sick and wounded. The "incidents" of the title refers to anecdotes and stories that were collected or became known to the Commission. These were believed to reflect the often sacrosanct nature of the wartime experience and frequently revolve around men facing death and expressing their faith in their God. It must have been a frequent source of sermon material for many pastors in the latter years of the 19th century.

Christian Memorials Of The War

Date:
2003
Creator:
Hackett, Horatio B.
Publisher/Studio:
Concord, VA: Re-Enactors Mission for Jesus Christ

The author acknowledges in the preface that his goal "has been simply to gather up some fragments of this great history that otherwise might be lost." Published in 1864, this book is similar to a few others but has even less structure. While some of the stories are attributed to the letters of specific individuals, for the most part there is no attempt to verify the historical accuracy of the events described. Therefore the incidents in question should be judged solely as literary works and not interpreted as having any historical value. I doubt this book would have much appeal for our bookstore.
