U.S.S. Ticonderoga-War Of 1812 Model

After the Battle of Plattsburgh, the U.S.S. Ticonderoga was nicknamed "the ship that saved the Union." She was converted from a commercial steamer to a 17 cannon man-of-war in a fortnight at Vergennes, Vermont in 1814, in time to help repel a British naval invasion of Lake Champlain.

"The Battle Of Lake Champlain"

It is indeed fortunate for the United States of America that the lake portion of this battle was won for us by Thomas MacDonough, as the land battle would surely have been lost if the order for a general attack had ever been given as we were greatly outnumbered on land, but only slightly outnumbered on the water. In this painting Davidson has depicted the American ships Ticonderoga, Preble, Eagle, and Saratoga II triumphing over the British vessels Confiance, Linnet, and smaller British galleys.
