Slave Advertisement

"Hiring out" or renting slaves, both on a short term and a yearly basis, was a common practice. Many southerners who could not afford to own a slave rented slaves for brief periods. Even the United States government, as this document indicates, rented slaves from their masters to work in the Armory at Harpers Ferry.

<i>Amistad</i> Uprising

In July 1839, Cinque, a West African chieftain, led a revolt on board the slave ship Amistad. Although Cinque ordered the captain to return the ship and passengers to Africa, the white crew sailed into Long Island, New York, where the Africans were seized, charged with murder and jailed.
