Willys-Overland Motor Company | Montgomery, George

Content Description:

Cars like this gasoline-burning coupes and sedans nicknamed "gassers" were enormously popular with drag racing fans in the 1950s and 1960s. Between 1959 and 1966 this Willys and its owner/builder/driver "Ohio George" Montgomery won its class at the National Hot Rod Association national championships six times. Willys were small economy cars in the 1930s but their light weight made them favorites with drag racers. Montgomery was a talented mechanic and machinist who frequently modified his "World's Wildest Willys" to keep it competitive over the years. This its final version, with the top chopped four inches, fiberglass hood, fenders and doors, and a supercharged single-overhead-cam Ford V-8 engine. Engine: Ford V8, single-overhead cam V8, 427 cu. in., 850 hp (est.)
