The intent of hybrid automobiles is to improve fuel efficiency and reduce tailpipe emissions compared to standard internal combustion powered cars. Hybrids use small internal combustion engines and battery powered electric motors. Powerful computers and sophisticated software coordinate the smooth, seamless transfer of power between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor. This Prius is one of the "first generation" of Toyota's hybrid cars, introduced in the United States in 2000.
