Rattle. Sekere or Gourd Shaker. An African American musical instrument that consists of a large, tan, round gourd with a slender neck, widening to a slightly enlarged opening. Large round body is covered with green and black faceted beads which have been strung on a net of diamond-patterned black thread. Beaded net hangs loosely from a narrow black thread braid around the base of the neck and rattles when the gourd is shaken. There is a black braid loop handle at the top. Top edge has a black, geometric pattern painted around it.
