This image shows a bridge over Antietam Creek, near the town of Sharpsburg, MD. On September 17, 1862, Union forces desperately tried to cross Antietam Creek and overwhelm the Confederate forces. The Federals eventually succeeded, but the Confederates had held off long enough to avoid a decisive defeat at Antietam.
