This photograph shows Allan Pinkerton, a pioneer in intelligence collection, security, and espionage. Born in Scotland, Pinkerton served in the U.S. Army, and later worked as a bodyguard for President Lincoln. After the Civil War, Pinkerton expanded his detective service to investigate crime and secure banks and stagecoaches.
