This photograph captures the Confederate dead alongside the Hagerstown Turnpike. The road, which leads into Sharpsburg from the north, saw heavy fighting in the first hours of the battle, as General McClellan's Union Army of the Potomac attacked General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.
