On September 5, 1781, the French navy blocked the British navy from getting to the isolated British soldiers, commanded by General Charles Cornwallis, in Virginia. In addition, the American and French infantries freely encircled Cornwallis' escape. The Battle of the Virginia Capes effectively sealed off the British army at Yorktown, and ensured the Franco-American victory.
