Content Description: 

Black beaver civilian hat decorated for militia use. Eagle is mounted on an oval cartouche painted light blue, surrounded by a white border and seventeen white five-pointed stars. Edge of hat brim retains vestiges of black binding and, on left side the brim shows a series of two radial lines of stitching which may mark where a ribbon or mourning band was once affixed to the hat. Gray paper lining in crown. No label. Wire loop in front of crown for fastening lower end of plume socket; cut hole in top of crown immediately above eagle to accommodate plume socket shank.
