Book of Bylaws of the Orphan House, Charleston, South Carolina. Published in Charleston: Steam-Power Presses of Evans and Cogswell, 1861. 40 Pages. This book offers the rules and regulations of the Orphan House of Charleston, founded in 1790. Over 300, children lived in the house at any given time. The need for orphan houses increased during the Civil War so public and charitable funds were needed, an issue discussed in the document including admissions, clothing, discipline, recreation, morals, studies, uniforms, and teachers. An example of how a Civil War orphanage would be run.
