Originally ordered as an arm for most British officers, spontoons were commonly exchanged for fusils -- light muskets -- during wartime. In the American army, the exact reverse occurred as officers were ordered to turn in muskets and carry spontoons. These were not so much weapons as they were symbols of rank.
