The broad axe was used to square timber after it was cut to length and scored. In order to be squared, a log is anchored in place with iron dogs, made by the smith. The axe was the primary tool of the pioneer. It was used for felling trees, scoring, hewing, and corner notching. The broad axe was used to square timber after it was cut to length and scored.
