Content Description: 

Cattle and sheep were predominant in the Owens Valley in the 1860s as ranchers found a temporary market to supply miners and prospectors. This calf weaner prohibited a maturing calf from nursing. The design allowed the calf to eat and drink when its head was tipped down, but the wire muzzle slipped over its mouth if it reached upward to nurse.
