Content Description: 

Half portrait of seated Federal soldier. Signed on the back as John B. Closson of Company A of the Twenty-Sixth Massachusetts. Closson served as a Private in the 26th Mass. throughout his service in the war. Image by A. S. Hayward of Proctorville Vermont. The Twenty Sixth mustered in at Cambridge Mass in August of 1861. Saw service in the occupation of Ship Island Mississippi early in 1862 and later saw Battle in Louisiana. Saw garrison duty in New Orleans in middle of 1863. Later transferred to the Nineteenth Army Corps which saw service under General Benjamin Butler in the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. By the end of the war the Twenty-Sixth Massachusetts was transferred to the Army of the Shenandoah until August 26,1865.
