Confederate Cavalry Enlisted Man's Shell Jacket

Private Edward Landstreet wore this shell jacket while serving as a courier in the 1st Virginia Cavalry during the Gettysburg Campaign. Born in Baltimore, he enlisted on September 22, 1861 at Fairfax Court House, Virginia. He served as a courier for General J.E.B. Stuart from October 1861 through August 1862. A seasoned veteran by the time of the Gettysburg Campaign, he would serve with the regiment for the remainder of the war and later as a partisan ranger with Col. John S. Mosby.
