Handmade silk flag. In lower right hand corner is the date July 4, 1836. Unit flag. Yellow or natural silk background with blue appliques: eagle, 26 stars, rifle, and "July 4, 1836/ Peace or War/Liberty or Death" in pale blue with narrow green braid covering raw edges of appliques. Has red and blue ribbons to tie to pole. Handsewn, 4 pieces sewn together. (This description previously referred to "23 stars". I have corrected that to read 26 stars based on the file photograph which clearly shows 26 stars. Leslie Kesler 10/23/08) Apparently this was donated to UNCC by a Mrs. J. L. Carr of 111 Hermitage Rd. Charlotte NC. A 1970 letter in the file indicates that Bonnie Cone had turned the flag over to the library around that time and the library staff were attempting to contact Mrs. Carr to establish the provenance.
