The 39th New York Volunteer Infantry comprised of a multitude of nationalities--three companies of Germans, three of Hungarians and one each of Swiss, Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Their colorful uniforms, including an Italian felt hat, a Hungarian hussar jacket and French trousers, reflected the ethnic diversity of the soldiers.
