George Washington's final draft of his resignation speech that he gave in the Old Senate Chamber of the Maryland State House on December 23, 1783. In response to instructions from Congress that he was expected to make formal remarks, Washington wrote this speech while he was in Annapolis. Upon resigning his commission as commander in chief of the Continental Army, Washington rode home to Mount Vernon to be home for Christmas. The annotations on this two-page document were all made by George Washington. There are two official copies of this General Washington's speech; this draft was given to a member of the Congressional protocol committee.
