Title:

Grey Folding Forage-style Cap
Date:
1835
Creator:
Charles C. Plaisted, Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Content Description:

Gray wool folding forage-style cap with stamped brass visor, unpainted on underside, various decorative embellishment, and a black hackel plume. Cap form derives directly from the black leather forage cap adopted by the U.S. Army in 1833, which remained government issue until 1839. Cap is of three-piece construction designed to fold flat except for the visor; adaptation of the government's practical design for militia use effectively defeated an element of practicality. Edges of the poke are piped with black leather. A 1 7/16" wide gilt braid encircles the base in lieu of an ornamental chinstrap. Both front and rear are adorned with large red wool chevrons with attached gilt cording. Three cardboard-backed gilt bullion and gold sequin covered stars decorate the front. Beneath the apex of the front chevron is a stamped brass spread eagle secured by a linen tape passed through three wire eyelets inside cap. There is a 2 3/4" wide brown morocco sweatband with drawstring and a complete white glazed chintz lining. Two paper labels are pasted inside reading: CHARLES C. PLAISTED,/CAP MANUFACTURER,/No. 2, Daniel Street,/PORTSMOUTH, N.H." Below, in ink on the same label, an inscription reads: "Phillip Currier 4rgt (?) Sarg." Above, on another paper label, in ink script, "Thomas C. Seavitt/North Hampton, N.H./September 16 AD 1835." Black hackel plume is enclosed in a black morocco leather plume socket, arcs over crown of hat and is attached at opposite side by a cord looped around a small bone button.
