By 1870 the B&O Railroad bridge into Harpers Ferry was made entirely of Bollman iron spans. The Bollman bridge carried rail traffic from 1870 until 1894, when the bridge was converted for automobile traffic. Although the 1936 flood destroyed the Bollman bridge, sections of the original piers still stand in the Potomac.
