As the railroads promoted excursions to Harpers Ferry, fancier boardinghouses and hotels on Camp Hill accommodated an annual influx of summer boarders, mostly middle-class tourists from Washington, DC. From these establishments, there are guest books, photographs, and other records to indicate how managers and tenants lived.This pipe with a political message was found in the privy of a boardinhouse built by James McGraw and later owned by the Dorans.
