Content Description: 

Replacing the M1841 Mountain Howitzer, this was the first original breech-loading gun in the US Army. It provided fire support to the US Cavalry during the late Indian Wars. The Hotchkiss also saw action in the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection, 1898-1900. It has a range of 4,000 yards and fires explosive shell and canister rounds. The M1875 weighed 336 pounds and could be broken down into two loads and, with its ammunition, carried on the backs of three mules.
