This bronze statue of Captain John Paul Jones, America's first well-known naval fighter, was designed by Charles Henry Nichaus and cast by Gorham Company of Providence, Rhode Island, between 1912 and 1920. Congress appropriated $50,000 for the heroic-size version of the statue in West Potomac Park, at 17th Street and Independence Avenue NW.
