Joseph William Latimer was known as the "boy major" in his Confederate artillery battalion. This trunk traveled with him during the war, and perhaps to Gettysburg. On July 2, at age 19, he suggered a mortal shrapnel wound as he directed his battery's fire against Cemetery Hill.
