Ladderback Chair
ca. 1840-1900

Content Description:

Chair, or Ladderback Chair. Has animal hide seat with rawhide strips laced below seat rails or lists. Truncated conical feet, now worn away on proper right side (both front & back). Legs have two turned coves at 1/3 and 2/3 level of front & back legs. Two rungs on all four sides. Stiles taper upwards to acorn-style finials (proper left one now missing). 3 shaped & bowed slats. This type of chair had dry rungs and slats inserted into freshly turned green legs; the legs shrank around the dry rungs, locking them in place. The legs and rungs appear to be hickory, slats are possibly curly.
