A four page letter from Mary (Molly) Ridout to Anne Tasker Ogle describing George Washington's resignation of his commission as commander in chief of the Continental Army on December 23, 1783. This is the only known account of the resignation ceremony that was authored by a woman. Ridout viewed the ceremony from the "ladies gallery" in the Old Senate Chamber in the Maryland State House.
