Content Description: 

English emigrant James Noble established the Noble & Brothers Foundry along with five of his sons at Rome, Georgia in 1855. In June 1861, the company received a Confederate government contract to produce cannon.The foundry produced both iron and bronze cannon in smoothbore and rifled guns. In October 1862 one of the Noble brothers attacked and beat a Confederate Ordnance Department inspector at the foundry. The outraged Chief of Ordnance, Josiah Gorgas, terminated the contract, stating,
