The Niagara Movement was not the first group to seek inspiration from John Brown and his "Fort". In 1896 the Colored Women's League also visited. Future Niagara member Max Barber accompanied the Women's League then, along with another relative of one of Brown's fallen comrades. Mary Simpson Patterson Leary Langston, the widow of Lewis Leary, was with the women in 1896, too.
