Content Description:
Medal. The Medjidie; an order bestowed upon General W. W. Loring by the Sultan of Turkey. The character in the center in gold is the Sultan's turrah (signature in monogrammatic form, used as his symbol). The characters in the circle read "friendship, zeal, loyalty," and include the date 1268 (of the Hegira), about 1851-1852 A.D. The decoration is of solid silver and gold, 3 1/2 inches in diameter, and star-shaped.
