Militia Officer's Chapeau-De-Bras
circa 1830-1835

Content Description:

litia officer's chapeau-de-bras or hat in dark beaver felt. Silk ribbon edge binding and broad diagonal bands. Black binding ribbon has American Eagle pattern, as a continuing repeat, woven into it. Leather sweatband is missing from one side; embossed silk crown liner somewhat deteriorated but bears printed label of S. & H. Rhoades of Boston. Gilt bullion tassels depend from each of the points. The hat is accompanied by an elaborate red feather plume which may or may not be original but is certainly appropriate in form for the chapeau and the period. The original shaped pasteboard box survives with its cover. The blue paper cover of the box is somewhat faded with the passage of time and it has undergone some damage and some sewn repairs. There is an engraved paper label on the top of the cover which displays an array of civilian and military hats amidst ornate stylized leafage and with a sunburst behind. Label reads: "S. & A.H. ROADES/WATER PROOF/HAT MANUFACTURERS /No. 1 COURT STREET/BOSTON."
