Content Description: 

Canteen. Model 1858 U. S. Army "smooth side" Canteen. Metal body appears to possibly be tin with a zinc or tin plating. Exposed areas of metal are slightly corroded, but not rusted. Neck is closed with a chained cork. Grayish-brown-colored cloth cover is a thick wool with several "moth" holes. Cover has three letter initials stenciled on it, possibly the owner. (See Marks & Inscriptions). Cotton canvas carrying strap is threaded through three metal tabs at outer edge of canteen, one at lower edge and two at either side. Cotton shoulder strap is detached from canteen on one end.
