The most famous instance of violent slave rebellion in the antebellum South occurred in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1831. Led by Nat Turner, a group of 70 slaves murdered approximately 60 whites during a 24-hour period.In retaliation, Southern whites killed over 100 African-Americans--some rebels, others innocent victims. When the rebellion failed, Turned fled to the woods, but he was captured and subsequently hanged.
